释义

rower-backn.

Brit. /ˈrəʊəbak/, U.S. /ˈroʊərˌbæk/
Forms: 1600s rower-backe, 1900s– rower-back.
Origin: Apparently either (i) a borrowing from Dutch. Or (ii) formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: Dutch roerbak ; row v.3, -er suffix1, back n.2
Etymology: Apparently either < Dutch roerbak (although this is first attested later: 18th cent. with reference to papermaking; < roeren to stir (see rore v.) + bak trough, tub: see back n.2), or < row v.3 + -er suffix1 + back n.2 (although this is also attested later). Compare rowed adj.2 and quot. 1641 at row v.3 1. Compare earlier roaring basket n. at roaring n.2
