Etymology: < Row (now Rhu), the name of a town in Dunbartonshire, Scotland, where the Revd. J. McLeod Campbell was minister from 1825–30 + -ite suffix1.
Christian Church. Now historical.
A follower of the religious teachings of the Revd. J. McLeod Campbell of Row in Scotland. Chiefly in plural, regarded collectively.Campbell was excommunicated as a heretic by the Presbyterian Church in 1831, but continued working with an independent Glasgow congregation. His main thesis was that ‘the spiritual context of the sufferings of Christ, rather than their penal character, made atonement for sin’ ( F. L. Cross & E. A. Livingstone, Oxf. Dict. Christian Church (1997)).
