Etymology: < ancient Greek ἀκρόπολις upper or higher city, citadel, especially that of Athens < ἄκρο- acro- comb. form + πόλις city (see -polis comb. form). Compare post-classical Latin acropolis (6th cent.), Middle French, French acropolis (1552 in Rabelais; now more commonly acropole).
A citadel or fortified part of an ancient Greek city, typically one built on a hill. Frequently (with capital initial) as the proper name of the ancient citadel of Athens. Also figurative.
