Having coarse unkempt hair; shock-headed.In quot. 1597, perhaps with reference to the practice, formerly common in Ireland, of wearing the hair in a thick mass over the forehead and eyes (see glib n.¹). In later quots. the term is chiefly used of Irish people, with allusion to quot. 1597.
