Origin: Probably a borrowing from French. Etymons: French rumpant, rumpre, rompre.
Etymology: Probably < Anglo-Norman rumpant, present participle of rumpre, variant of Anglo-Norman and Middle French, French rompre to break (see rompu adj.).Anglo-Norman rumpant is apparently only attested as adjective in the sense ‘(of ointments) corrosive’ (13th cent., in medical contexts).
Obsolete. rare.
