Origin: Of unknown origin.
Etymology: Origin unknown. Ling. Atlas Scotl. (1977) II. 115–16 records the word widely from many parts of Scotland, and also from Northumberland and Cumberland.
Chiefly Scottish and English regional (northern) in later use.
Any of several plants of the family Brassicaceae ( Cruciferae) which grow as weeds of cultivated land; esp. charlock or wild mustard, Sinapis arvensis, and wild radish, Raphanus raphanistrum. Also in plural.Recorded earliest in runchball n. at Compounds.
