1. Chiefly with the and capital initials. An association of rugby clubs formed in England in 1871 to harmonize the rules of the game and regulate competitions. Also: any similar association of rugby clubs in another country.Called in full the Rugby Football Union, the organization governs the game in England. Similar associations were subsequently set up in other rugby-playing countries.
