Origin: A borrowing from Yiddish. Etymon: Yiddish rogelekh.
Etymology: < Yiddish rogelekh, rogalekh (chiefly as plural noun), either < Polish róg horn, corner (Old Polish rog ) + Yiddish -ele , suffix forming diminutives ( < Middle High German -el , suffix forming diminutives (German -el : see -el suffix1)), or < Polish rogal crescent-shaped roll or bun (Old Polish rogal, c1500; < rog (see above) + -al, suffix forming nouns), with reference to the usual shape of the pastry. Compare Polish rogalik small crescent-shaped roll ( < rogal + -ik, suffix forming diminutives; > Russian rogalik, in same sense), (regional) rogalka twirl ( < rogal + -ka, suffix forming diminutives). In β. forms probably partly reflecting loss of the final /x/ in pronunciations by speakers whose phoneme inventory lacks that sound, and partly < a (probably inferred) Yiddish singular form rogal or rogele. The first-syllable vowel probably reflects regional variation in Yiddish.
Jewish Cookery.
Usually with plural agreement. A confection consisting of small pastries, typically crescent-shaped, filled with a variety of ingredients, such as nuts, raisins, jam, etc.
