Origin: A borrowing from Irish. Etymon: Irish ruaille buaille.
Etymology: < Irish ruaille buaille (19th cent. or earlier), reduplication (with variation of the initial consonant) of ruaille , apparently an expressive formation, perhaps influenced by e.g. ruaill rush, dash, and also buail to beat (see bualadh bos n.).Compare Irish rí-rá commotion, clamour (see ree-raw n.), and the phrase rí-rá agus ruaille buaille, in the same sense, but intensified (combining the two expressions with agus ‘and’).
