An aggressively masculine (young) man who is dedicated to sport (frequently but not exclusively rugby), regarded as being boorish, chauvinistic, and given to rowdy drunken behaviour. Hence in more general and often less pejorative use: a rugby player or fan. Cf. bugger n.1 3a.In British use particularly associated with Rugby Union rather than Rugby League.
