单词 ruggle
释义

rugglen.

Brit. /ˈrʌɡl/, U.S. /ˈrəɡ(ə)l/
Origin: Of uncertain origin. Perhaps formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: rug v.1, -le suffix 1
Etymology: Origin uncertain. It is also unclear whether sense 2 represents the same word as sense 1; if so, it may show an extended use. Perhaps < rug v.1 + -le suffix 1, the toy or rattle being so called on account of the fact that it is shaken. Compare English regional ruggle to shake (something) so as to make a rattling noise (late 18th cent.), to reel, stagger, to walk with difficulty (19th cent.), perhaps the reflex of an unattested Middle English borrowing < early Scandinavian (compare Norwegian rugle to lurch, totter, to shake, sway, Swedish regional ruggla to lurch, totter, to shake, Old Danish rygle to fall over). Compare also Scots (Shetland) ruggel to shake or rock backwards and forwards, to be unsteady, to totter (second half of the 19th cent.) < the unattested Norn cognate of Norwegian rugle (see above).
1. A plaything, toy; spec. a rattle. Now English regional (Gloucestershire) and rare.
