Etymology: < post-classical Latin Rugianus (1537 in the passage translated in quot. 1550) < classical Latin Rugiī (plural), the name of a tribe originally inhabiting the southern coast of the Baltic Sea ( < a continental Germanic word (compare the later Germanic reflexes cited below), perhaps < the same base as rye n.¹, perhaps with reference to the use of rye as a staple food by the members of the tribe) + -ānus -an suffix.
