Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; perhaps originally modelled on a French lexical item, and perhaps originally modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: ruinous adj., -ity suffix.
Etymology: < ruinous adj. + -ity suffix, perhaps originally after Anglo-Norman ruynousté (a1377) and post-classical Latin ruinositas state of ruin (from 1425 in British sources).In quot. 1908 after post-classical Latin ruinositas in the text being edited.

Decay, dilapidation; a decayed or dilapidated thing.
