Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French ruban.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman rubane, Anglo-Norman and Middle French, French ruban (13th cent. in Old French; also 1530 in Middle French as rubant in Palsgrave), probably a variant (with rounding of the stem vowel before a labial) of Anglo-Norman ribane and Middle French riban , reban riband n., although attested earlier. Compare post-classical Latin rubantum (1345 in a British source), rubanum (1349, 1369, 1390 in British sources), Old Occitan ruban (14th cent.). Compare earlier riband n. and later ribbon n.It is unclear whether the following shows a variant of the Middle English or the Anglo-Norman word:1406 in Archaeologia (1915) 67 181 Et ij coopertoria..garnita cum rubant et freng serici.
Chiefly Scottish in early use. Now rare.
A ribbon. In later use only in French-speaking contexts.
