Etymology: < rubber n.1 + plant n.1; in sense 1 so called with reference to its latex, which can be used to make rubber.
1. Any of several trees used as a source of latex for making rubber (see rubber tree n.); (in later use) spec. the evergreen Ficus elastica (family Moraceae), native to South-East Asia and widely cultivated as a house plant for its large, dark green shiny leaves.
