Origin: A borrowing from Panjabi. Etymon: Panjabi rakkh.
Etymology: < Panjabi rakkh, rakh protection, land reserved by government, reserve for grass, game, etc. < Sanskrit rakṣā protection, preservation (see rakhi n.). Compare Hindi rakh reserve for grass, game, etc.
Indian English. Now rare.
In South Asia, esp. the Punjab: wasteland, wilderness; (also) a forest; a forest reserve.
