Origin: Of uncertain origin. Perhaps formed within English, by compounding. Etymon: dub v.1
Etymology: Origin uncertain. Perhaps a reduplication (with variation of the initial consonant and suffixation: see -y suffix6) of dub v.1 (compare sense 5 at that entry and also dub n.2), perhaps suggested by rub-a-dub n., rub-a-dub-dub n., etc.
British. Angling.
Minced fish such as pilchards, mackerel, etc., placed in a net bag and used as a lure for sharks and other large fish.
