Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin rūbīgin- , rūbīgō , rōbīgō , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin rūbīgin-, rūbīgō, variant of rōbīgō rust, blight (see robiginous adj.) + -ous suffix. Compare post-classical Latin rubiginosus (6th cent.). In sense 1b after scientific Latin use of post-classical Latin rubiginosus as specific epithet (1763). Compare later robiginous adj.
