Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin rubinus.
Etymology: Ultimately < post-classical Latin rubinus (see ruby n.1 and adj.), probably via forms in Romance languages and in other Germanic languages: compare Old Occitan (Gascon) robin (13th cent.), Spanish rubin (1396), Portuguese rubim (1600), Italian rubino (a1321), and compare also Middle Dutch rubijn , robijn (Dutch robijn ), Middle Low German rubīn , robīn , Middle High German rubīn , rūbin (German Rubin ), Old Swedish robin (Swedish rubin ), Danish rubin . Compare also Anglo-Norman and Old French rubin , Old French robin (second half of the 12th cent.). Compare earlier ruby n.1, ruby adj.
