Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Rudbeckia.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Rudbeckia ( Linnaeus Systema naturæ (1735)) < the names of Olof Rudbeck (1660–1740), who taught Linnaeus, and of his father Olof Rudbeck (1630–1702), both Swedish botanists at Uppsala University + -ia -ia suffix1.
Any of numerous tall perennial flowering plants comprising the genus Rudbeckia (family Asteraceae ( Compositae)), native to North America and bearing yellow or orange flowers with a prominent conical disc of dark florets in the centre, esp. black-eyed Susan, R. hirta. Also (in form Rudbeckia): the genus itself.Many of these plants are grown as ornamentals.Valid publication of the genus name: Linnaeus Species plantarum (1753) I. 906.
