Etymology: < French salade, < Spanish celada or Italian celata, believed to represent Latin caelāta (sc. cassis or galea), (a helmet) ornamented with engraving. Compare Middle Dutch salade, sallade, salla. The Latin adjective has not been found in this elliptical use. Compare ‘loricae galeaeque aeneae, caelatae opere Corinthio’ (Cicero).
