Etymology: < scientific Latin Ruppia, genus name ( Linnaeus Critica botanica (1737) 94) < the name of Heinrich Bernhard Rupp (1688–1719), German botanist + -ia -ia suffix1.
A plant of the genus Ruppia, the sole member of the family Ruppiaceae (formerly included in the pondweed family, Potamogetonaceae), comprising plants found in shallow brackish or saline water, having thread-like leaves with small flowers borne on long, frequently coiled stems which float on the surface of the water at maturity, esp. (more fully sea ruppia) the wigeon-grass, R. maritima. Also: the genus itself.Valid publication of the genus name: Linnaeus Species plantarum (1753) I. 127.

1793 J. E. Smith Eng. Bot. II. 136 Potamogeton marinum most resembles the Ruppia, but even before flowering it may be distinguished by its leaves, for the most part being not so membranous.
1850 A. Pratt Chapters Common Things Sea-side i. 72 He may chance to meet with that interesting plant, the Sea Ruppia, or Tassel-grass, (Ruppia maritima); flower it can hardly be called, since it has no gay petals to distinguish it.
