Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin ruptilis.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin ruptilis breakable (1534 or earlier) < classical Latin rupt- , past participial stem of rumpere to break (see rumpent n.) + -ilis -il suffix. With the specific botanical use compare French ruptile (1800 or earlier).
Chiefly Botany. Obsolete.
Breakable; spec. (of a plant part) breaking into irregular pieces.
