Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish rurales.
Etymology: < Mexican Spanish rurales, specific use as noun of the plural of Spanish rural rural adj., originally short for cuerpos rurales, literally ‘rural forces’, denoting the Mexican Guardia Rural Rural Guard.The singular form rurale (see sense 2) has been inferred from the plural form within English.
Now historical.
1. With plural agreement. In late 19th- and early 20th-cent. Mexico: a mounted force of federal law enforcement officers; the members of this force collectively. Established in 1861, originally to combat banditry, the Rurales gained a reputation for ruthlessness under President Porfirio Díaz (in power 1876–80 and 1884–1911). The force was disbanded in 1914.
