Etymology: < Russian rus′ (see Russ n.).The form Rūs (with macron), sometimes used by scholars in the context of transliteration from Arabic (compare quots. 1965 at sense A., 1914 at sense B.), is via Arabic †Rūs (see Russ n.).

With the and plural agreement. A people of Scandinavian origin (later assimilated with the Slavic population) whose settlement around Novgorod and Kiev in the 9th cent. gave rise to the Russian principalities.
