Etymology: < Tibetan sa.skya, the name of one of the three Red Hat schools of Tibetan Buddhism, after the name of their original monastery (see Sakyapa n.). Compare earlier Sakyapa n. and also Sakyapa adj.The place name is recorded in English contexts from at least the first half of the 19th cent.
