Etymology: < Tibetan sa.skya.pa < sa.skya, the name of one of the three Red Hat schools of Tibetan Buddhism < sa.skya, the name of the original monastery of this school + -pa, suffix forming nouns denoting a person.The name of the monastery literally means ‘pale land’, apparently with reference to the soil in the region. It was founded in 1073 by Khön Könchok Gyalpo (see definition). English forms with internal -s- reflect the spelling of the etymon in Tibetan, which is based on the pronunciation of an earlier stage of that language.
