Etymology: < Middle French rusma (1553; French †rusma ), probably ultimately < ancient Greek χρῖσμα ointment (see chrism n.), perhaps via Ottoman Turkish.A connection with Ottoman Turkish hırızma rope muzzle, nose ring (Turkish hırızma nose ring; of unknown origin) has been suggested, but this is not attested in a relevant sense. In form rhusma probably by analogy with scientific words of Greek origin beginning with rh-.
