Etymology: < the name of Russia (see Russia n.) + leather n. So called because it was manufactured in Russia (compare e.g. quot. 1662, a translation of an account of travels in Russia, and quot. 1753; Kazan, a city on the River Volga, is the capital of Tatarstan, a republic within the Russian Federation). Compare Middle Low German rusch ledder , German †russisch Leder (1767 or earlier), French cuir de Russie (1659 in the passage translated in quot. 1662, or earlier). No parallel compound appears to be attested in Russian.

A durable leather made of skins impregnated with oil distilled from birchbark, extensively used in bookbinding.
