Origin: Probably partly a variant or alteration of another lexical item; perhaps modelled on a French lexical item. Perhaps also partly formed within English, by blending. Etymons: Russ adj., proper name Russia ; Russia n.
Etymology: In early use perhaps a blend of Russ adj. and the name of Russia (see Russia n.). In later use probably a variant of Russia n., probably after either †Russie (c1275 as Rusie ), the Middle English and early modern English name of the country (attested in English texts until the 17th cent.) or its etymon Old French, Middle French, French Russie (1180 or earlier). Compare earlier Russ n., Russian n., and (with the use as adjective) earlier Russ adj., Russian adj.
