Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Sahelanthropus.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Sahelanthropus, genus name (M. Brunet et al. 2002, in Nature 11 July 145/2; compare quot. 2002) < Sahel , the name of a region in Africa immediately south of the Sahara Desert (see Sahelian adj.), including parts of central Chad, where the fossil was discovered in 2001 + scientific Latin -anthropus man, human (see Pithecanthropus n.).
Palaeontology.
An extinct hominid, Sahelanthropus tchadensis, known from late Miocene fossil remains found in northern Chad, and dated to about seven million years ago. Also: the genus Sahelanthropus itself. Sahelanthropus might predate the differentiation of humans and chimpanzees. It is known only from a single cranium nicknamed ‘Toumai’.
