Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin. Or (ii) a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Latin acroteriasmos; Greek ἀκρωτηριασμός.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin acroteriasmos (1551 or earlier) or its etymon Hellenistic Greek ἀκρωτηριασμός < ancient Greek ἀκρωτηριάζειν to cut off the extremities, in Hellenistic Greek also to cut off hands and feet, mutilate, to amputate ( < ἀκρωτήριον (see acroterion n.) + -άζειν, suffix forming verbs from nouns or adjectives) + -μός, suffix forming nouns.
Obsolete. rare. Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.
Amputation of an extremity of the body.
