Etymology: Origin uncertain. Perhaps < an unattested early Scandinavian verb in sense ‘to shake’, traces of which are perhaps seen in Old Icelandic hryðja rid v. See further K. F. Sundén ‘The Etymology of Middle English Roþe, Roþele, and Ruþe’ in N. Bøgholm et al. Grammatical Miscellany Offered to Otto Jespersen on His Seventieth Birthday (1930) 109–22.
Obsolete. rare.
