Etymology: Partly (in sense 1) < Sanskrit sādhana (also with vernacular pronunciation sādhan ) prerequisites, means, accomplishment, (later) means of developing psychophysical powers, and partly (in sense 2) < modern Sanskrit sādhanā means of achieving mastery; spiritual effort, devotion, adoration, both < Sanskrit sādh- to accomplish, succeed. Compare siddhi n. Compare also earlier sadhu n.
