Etymology: < French révolté (1668 or earlier), use as noun of past participle of révolter revolt v. Compare révolté (adjective) rebellious, in a state of rebellion (1559), apostate (1564). Compare earlier revolt n.2 and revolter n.In the form revoltée (with reference to men) perhaps by confusion with révoltée n., denoting a woman. O.E.D. Suppl. (1982) gives the pronunciation as (revǫlte) /revɒlte/.
