Origin: A borrowing from Arabic. Partly also a borrowing from French. Etymons: Arabic ṣalāt-, ṣalā; French zala.
Etymology: < Arabic ṣalāt-, ṣalā ritual prayer < Syriac ṣĕlōṯā (Aramaic ṣĕlōṯā (emphatic form) prayer < ṣallī to pray (Syriac ṣallī )). Originally (in form zala in quot. 1652) via Middle French zala (1574 in the passage translated), itself < Spanish zalá (early 16th cent.; end of the 14th cent. as †çalá) < Arabic ṣalā.Compare the following earlier quot., which probably shows an isolated earlier borrowing < Arabic ṣalli , imperative singular of ṣalla to pray:1615 W. Bedwell Arabian Trudgman in tr. Mohammedis Imposturæ sig. N3, at Salie The Turks in 24 houres, do go sixe times to prayers: The first time is..about two houres before day, and is called Sallie.The Arabic plural form is ṣalāwāt . Compare Ottoman Turkish ṣalât (plural ṣalavât ; < Arabic), used in learned contexts (with everyday speech using namaz namaz n.).

Ritual prayer, the second of the Five Pillars of Islam; spec. any one of the five ritual prayers which a Muslim is obliged to perform daily, each consisting of its own set movements and spoken or silent recitations.The five daily ritual prayers are: ṣalāt al-fajr, the dawn prayer (also called ṣalāt al-ṣubḥ); ṣalāt al-ẓuhr, the noonday prayer; ṣalāt al-ʿaṣr, the late afternoon prayer; ṣalāt al-maġrib, the sunset prayer; and ṣalāt al-ʿišā', the night prayer.
