Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Saldanha.
Etymology: Either < Saldanha, the name of a town in the Western Cape Province, South Africa, near to where the fossils were discovered in 1953, or < Saldanha Bay, the name of a large natural harbour after which the town was named (although the finds were not made in the immediate vicinity of the coast).Saldanha Bay is now also the name of the local municipality, in which Elandsfontein, the original find spot, is situated.
Palaeontology.
Used attributively with reference to an extinct hominid known from fossil remains found at Elandsfontein near Hopefield in Saldanha Bay, South Africa, regarded as the same form as Kabwe man; esp. in Saldanha Man. Cf. Kabwe n.
