Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin saeva indignatio.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin saeva indignatio savage indignation (see quot. 1740) < classical Latin saeva , feminine of saevus fierce, furious (see sevidical adj.) + indignātiō indignation n.
‘Savage indignation’, a feeling of contemptuous rage at human folly. Originally, and in later use often with reference or allusion to Swift's epitaph (see quot. 1740).
