In the Soviet Union: an act of working voluntarily on a Saturday; a Saturday worked voluntarily. Cf. subbotnik n.In the quot. 1932 the translator may be presuming the meaning to be ‘a person who follows the practice of working voluntarily on Saturdays’, perhaps prompted by English uses of -nik suffix. Cf. subbotnik n. 1.
