Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French savoir.
Etymology: < French savoir fact of knowing, knowledge (842 in Old French as savir ), wisdom (end of the 10th cent. as savier ), fact of knowing the required behaviour in a given situation, etiquette (1463–4 in Middle French as sçavoir ), use as noun of savoir to know, to know how (see savant n.). Compare earlier savoir faire n., savoir vivre n.
Knowledge, wisdom; know-how. Cf. savvy n.Also with modifying word indicating the field in which such knowledge or skill is possessed. Cf. also savoir faire n., savoir vivre n.
