Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Savonarola.
Etymology: < the name of Girolamo Savonarola (1452–98), Italian Dominican monk, famed for his fierce opposition to ecclesiastical, moral, and political licence and corruption.Savonarola was highly influential in the political and cultural life of Florence during a period of republican government following the expulsion of the Medici in the late 15th cent.
1. A person considered to have the qualities of Girolamo Savonarola, esp. (in early use) a zealous reformer or spiritual leader, or (now more usually) a person who is considered austere, puritanical, or censorious in attitude.
