Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymons: Italian savonetta, French savonnette.
Etymology: < Italian savonetta (1564, now regional; 1508 as †saponetto ; now usually saponetta ; < sapone (see soap n.1) + -etta , feminine diminutive suffix: see -et suffix1, -etta suffix) and its model French savonnette (1579 in Middle French) < savon soap (see soap n.1) + -ette , feminine diminutive suffix (see -et suffix1, -ette suffix). In sense 2 after French arbre à savonnettes (1703 or earlier), arbre à savonnette (1780 or earlier).
Now rare.
