Etymology: < the name of La Manufacture de la Savonnerie, lit. ‘factory of La Savonnerie’, the name of a carpet and textile manufactory which operated from 1631 on the site of La Maison de la Savonnerie, an orphanage founded in 1614 by Marie de Medici in Chaillot, Paris, in a former soap works (compare la Savonnerie, Paris street name, recorded from c1300). Compare French tapis de la Savonnerie (1685 or earlier).The manufactory was established in 1627 on the order of Louis XIII by Pierre Dupont (1560–1640) and Simon Lourdet (1590–1667), French weavers, for the manufacture of Turkish and Persian-style carpets and furnishing textiles, and located in order to benefit from the cheap labour provided by the orphanage.
