Etymology: < German Biotit ( J. F. L. Hausmann Handb. der Mineral. (1847) I. 671) < the name of Jean-Baptiste Biot (see Biot n.) + -it -ite suffix¹, so called in honour of Biot's work on the optical qualities of mica. Compare French biotite (1848).

Mineralogy.

A black, dark brown, or greenish black mineral of the mica group, occurring in many igneous and metamorphic rocks, typically as tabular hexagonal crystals.Biotite is an aluminosilicate of potassium and iron or magnesium, often containing other elements. Crystal system: monoclinic.
