Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Sappho.
Etymology: < the name of Sappho (see Sapphic adj.). In sense 1 partly after scientific Latin sapho, specific name of the Sappho comet (in the former binomial Ornismya sapho (R. P. Lesson 1829), so called with reference to the perceived resemblance of the birds' tails to Sappho's golden lyre).The asteroid Sappho (see sense 2) was apparently the first to be named after a historical person; otherwise, most asteroids discovered in the 19th cent. were named after women from (chiefly classical) mythology (compare e.g. psyche n. 4 and Urania n. 2).
1. Ornithology. In full Sappho comet. A large South American hummingbird found in the central Andes, Sappho sparganura, which has a green head, violet back and rump, and (in the male) a long, deeply forked reddish-gold tail with black bars. Cf. comet n. 3.
