Forms: Also Middle English salfay, safye, 1500s salfer, saufer, sawpheir, saufeir, 1500s–1600s saiffer, 1600s sau(l)ffer, saifare, 1600s, 1800s saufey.
Etymology: Of obscure origin; probably connected with save v.; the last syllable may possibly represent fee n.2 or feer n.1 Compare the synonymous saughe n., and Older Scots saw silver.
Scottish and northern. Obsolete.
The sum paid for recovering lost property. Persons convicted of having stolen cattle were adjudged to pay double and saufey, i.e. apparently double the value, together with a sum representing what would have been due to one who had restored the cattle when it had strayed.
