单词 sarcenet
释义

sarcenetn.

/ˈsɑːsnɪt/
Forms: Middle English sarsinett, sarsynett, sarssinette, 1500s sarssynet, sarsenett(e, ( saresnet, sesynet, saircenett, sercenett, sarsnett, 1600s sarcnet, sarcenett), 1500s–1800s sarsnet, Middle English– sarcenet, 1500s– sarsenet.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman sarzinett (1373 in Exch. Accts. 397/16, Publ. Rec. Office: see Notes & Queries 8th Ser. I. 129), probably a diminutive of sarzin Saracen n. and adj. (see -et suffix1), suggested by Old French drap sarrasinois, medieval Latin pannus saracenicus, lit. ‘Saracen cloth’. Godefroy's sole example of the alleged Old French sarcenet, taken from Du Cange, is a mistake; it comes from a York Cathedral inventory of 1530, and the word is English. Palsgrave 1530 renders the English sarcenet by French taffetas. The only trace of the existence of the word in continental French appears to be the Swiss dialect sarcenet ‘lustrine de coton’ cited by Godefroy.
