Etymology: late Latin, < Greek σαρκόκολλα, < σαρκο-, σάρξ flesh + κόλλα glue: so called because of its reputed property of agglutinating wounds.

A sub-viscid gum resin brought from Arabia and Persia (now Iran) in light yellow or red grains. Its source is not certainly known: see quots. 1830, 1861.
