Origin: Apparently formed within English, by clipping or shortening.
Etymology: Apparently shortened < an English borrowing (although this is first attested later: see note) < Massachusett nasamp (1634), cognate with e.g. Munsee Delaware nsáapaan , Unami Delaware sá:p:a:n maize porridge (see suppawn n.).Although the shortening is likely to have taken place within English, the longer form nasamp is not attested in English use until the 19th cent., when it typically appears in historical contexts.

A porridge made from coarsely ground maize.
