单词 sarplier
释义

sarpliern.

/ˈsɑːplɪə/
Forms: Middle English–1600s sarpler, (Middle English sarpuler), Middle English sarpeler(e, ( sarplar, sarpelar, sarpliar), 1500s– sarplier; ScottishMiddle English sarplare, sarplair, sarpleth, 1600s serplaith.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman sarpler ( Rolls of Parl. I. 413, 1321–2), Old French sarpillere (modern French serpillière packing cloth) = Provençal sarpelheira, Catalan sarpallera, xarpallera, Spanish arpillera, Portuguese sarapilheira. Littré suggests that the word is a derivative (with suffix -ˈaria : see -er suffix2 2) of late Latin xērampelinus (medieval Latin corruptly xeropellinus, serampelinus, serapellinus) < Greek ξηραμπέλινος, of the colour of withered vine-leaves, < ξηρός dry, withered + ἄμπελος vine. But this derivation has been contested by later philologists. Compare French dialect (16th cent.) serpol bride's trousseau. Middle Dutch had sarpelier, serplier, pack of wool (also sarpeel).
